The Engagement

From the corner of the room, I start to panic
Nothing I have said has hit the mark
You reply with a volley of accusations
which I deflect with another blank remark
The retreating facts now seem inconclusive
but the evidence is very clear to me
If you take more than I give, you’ll leave me empty
On that at least we can all agree

I think I know how it feels
a light heart always conceals
the dark side that’s slipping through
and I feel a little closer to you

I’m glad to say this engagement is over
and it seems that you wear your feelings well
Someone told me you cried on their shoulder
bald emotions disguised as a funeral
The irony of this lazy constitution
my love for you is still doing fine
It survives all my efforts to subdue it
and teases me at night from time to time

I think I know how it feels
a light heart always conceals
the dark side that’s slipping through
and I feel a little closer to you

I woke up with you standing at my window
“How are you?” – you say you’re doing well
and suggest that we go out for breakfast
you’ve got some fantastic tale to tell
I hear how your success is running rampant
and how the fish are biting this time of year
Nothing strange and nothing unexpected
nothing new in an old lover’s ear

I think I know how it feels
a light heart always conceals
the dark side that’s slipping through
and I feel a little closer to you
